Rail and Tram Signalling Case Studies

We’ve worked with a number of clients throughout Australia and overseas, completing a number of essential design and installation projects.

Adelaide City Tramline Extension

Client: Downer York Joint Venture

Project Outline

In an effort to create greater connectivity and public transport options within Adelaide for locals and tourists alike, the South Australian state government committed to extending the existing tram network. The $80 million Adelaide tram line extension aims to increase capacity and service more areas around the Adelaide CBD, eastern and northern suburbs.

Rail Industries Construction’s role in this project was the installation, testing and commissioning of all tram signalling equipment including:

  • H&K (Hanning & Khal) points machines
  • H&K track circuits
  • H&K locations cabinets
  • hauling and jointing of all signalling and power cables

With work being carried out at the intersection of North Terrace and King William Street, one the city’s busiest intersections, our biggest challenge was managing construction around large volumes of traffic. Our approach was to carry out the work in multiple planned stages to minimise impact on road users and pedestrians, allowing this critical intersection to remain operational throughout the duration of the works.

Our client expressed that all our staff “had gone above and beyond” to achieve the desired project outcome, responding quickly to necessary changes and emergency call outs. Despite the challenges faced due to the location of the project, we completed our contract within the time and budget constraints.
